This is the Beef Farmers of Ontario's mid-day market report for Thursday, April 2, 2020

Prices are reported on a "per one hundred pound" basis, unless otherwise stated.

Ontario Live Cattle Trade

Updated daily as the information is submitted, completed by 12:00 noon.

Today at Ontario Livestock Exchange (OLEX) there are 100 fed cattle, 550 cows, 200 stockers, and 10 veal on offer.

Cows continue to sell on a lower trade, with good cows from 61.00-70.50 sale to 112.00.


Brussels Livestocks report was not submitted.

Alberta Direct Trade

The Alberta direct cattle trade on Wednesday was light with Canfax noting prices generally $8.00 lower than last week in the upper 140's on a picked up basis. Canfax also reports: "Lots of cattle that were offered yesterday were passed. Packers are likely pulling hard on April contract cattle."

U.S. Trade (U.S. funds)

The U.S. cash cattle trade was light yesterday at sharply lower prices. Trade in the south was from $112.00-$113.00, mostly $112.00 down $7.00 cwt from last week's weighted average prices.  In the north business was reported at $180.00 dressed, down $9.00 cwt.  Business is expected to continue but the market tone is set. Cattle futures are trading today at expanded limits of 4.50 for live cattle and 6.75 for feeders. This morning the market is quiet with no bids on the table, however asking prices are now sitting at $114.00-$115.00 live in the south and $183.00 dressed in the north.
