This is the Beef Farmers of Ontario's mid-day market report for Wednesday, January 22, 2020

Prices are reported on a "per one hundred pound" basis, unless otherwise stated.

Updated daily as the information is submitted, completed by 12:00 noon.

Today at the Ontario Stockyards Inc. there are 200 fed steers & heifers, 275 cows, 15 bulls and 4 veal calves on offer.

Cows and bulls are selling at prices $2.00-$5.00 cwt higher. Veal was steady to Monday and 700 stockers are expected for Thursday's sale.

Alberta Direct Trade

The Alberta direct trade for Tuesday saw no new trade to report, however some trade could start to surface this afternoon.  Canfax reports: "Technical price levels are unchanged from earlier in the week. There have been rumblings fed cattle contract volumes are larger for the second half of January compared to the first half of the month. Western Canadian packer margins are narrowing."

U.S. Trade (U.S. funds)

The U.S. cash cattle trade remains at a standstill with no bids on the table, however asking pricers are starting to surface from $126.00-$127.00 live in the south and $202.00 plus dressed in the north. Packer interest is expected to improve as the day progresses but active trading is not anticipated until Thursday or Friday.

At the Fed Cattle Exchange online auction today there were 561 head on offer, in 4 lots with delivery in 1-9 days.  All lots were asking $124.00 live with only one lot selling at $124.00 while the remaining three lots received no bids.
