With the 2022 Ontario provincial election quickly approaching, we need to build awareness of the current challenges, opportunities and issues facing the Ontario/Canadian beef industry.
Similar to the federal election last fall, BFO has put together a toolkit to assist Ontario’s beef farmers with engaging and participating in discussions with local Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) candidates on industry priorities prior to the election.
Every conversation between a farmer and their local MPP candidate increases the level of awareness surrounding the beef and broader agri-food industries and our associated opportunities and challenges.
Producers are encouraged to take the time to reach out to local MPP candidates through attendance at all-candidate meetings and/or one-on-one meetings. Producers can also engage MPP candidates through social media, emails, written letters or phone calls. Reaching out and building a connection with local MPP candidates will provide us a better understanding of each political party’s plans and commitments for agriculture in the future.
You will find the links to the toolkit below. In addition to the priority issues and corresponding background information, the toolkit includes a list of questions and conversation-starters to spark discussion with local MPP candidates, as well as a list of tips for communicating and meeting with candidates.
We have also created a two-sided document that summarizes the Ontario beef sector provincial election issues and priorities. This document can be sent to MPP candidates, or left with them after a meeting. If you would like a version of this document that includes your own contact information, please contact Thomas Brandstetter at the BFO office.
BFO staff have been working to pull together a contact list for MPP candidates in Ontario’s rural ridings; this listing is available below and will be updated as more candidate information becomes available in the coming days.

"CLICK AND SUBMIT" TOOL
To make connecting with candidates as easy as possible for everyone, BFO has also organized a "click and submit" campaign to make connecting with local candidates as simple as the click of a button. Simply add your information to the form and the system will automatically pull in the information to send it to the MPP candidates in your riding. Click "Send Email" at the bottom of the page and you are done. An email outlining the Ontario beef sector's priority issues will be sent to each of the candidates on your behalf. This is easy and quick, so we encourage all beef producers in the province to take a moment to participate, even if you plan to also meet with candidates individually or participate in all candidates meetings. Click HERE to participate.
SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
If you choose to engage with your local candidates on social media, we have created a number of graphics you can use to support your message through Twitter and Instagram, which highlight our five election priorities. You can download the images below and share through your own social channels. Remember to tag your local candidates and we recommend using the following hashtags: #onpoli, #ONelxn, #OntarioVotes, #ONvotes, #OntarioElection, or #OntarioElection2022
