Progress on Modernizing the Veterinary Assistance Program

February 26, 2026

The Beef Farmers of Ontario (BFO) is pleased to see progress in the modernization of the Veterinary Assistance Program (VAP), including participant eligibility, program administration and delivery, which was announced today by the Honorable George Pirie, Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth.

The Veterinary Assistance Program supports livestock farmers in northern and rural Ontario by helping improve access to veterinary services in their communities. The program provides funding to help cover veterinarians’ travel costs, short-term replacement (locum) services, and continuing education - making it easier for vets to serve livestock farmers in these regions.

The beef sector is an important contributor to Ontario’s economy and supports the growth of families, businesses and communities across the province. For our sector to grow and thrive, beef farmers need reliable access to large animal veterinary care. The lack of these critical services has been a longstanding issue for beef farmers across northern Ontario and other rural regions of the province. Ensuring our members have consistent access to large animal veterinary care remains a key priority for our sector.

As we work toward meaningful solutions, we are pleased to see progress in the modernization of the Veterinary Assistance Program, including expanding the list of eligible participants and inclusion of veterinary technicians, streamlining the application process, increasing compensation rates, approving telemedicine and ensuring available funding is fully utilized under the program.

While this represents an important step forward, we look forward to working with government on further improvements, including increased investments, to strengthen the program and ensure beef farmers have reliable access to critical veterinary care services.
